On a glorious afternoon on a brilliant playing surface the Jags were unstoppable. From the ref’s first whistle the boys were on it showing no signs of nerves at all. Mortimer looked shocked by our intensity as we immediately took control using both the size and the quality of the pitch to ping the ball about with menace.
We knew Mortimer had pockets of quality particularly up front but their centre forward hardly got a sniff all game as either Louis, Ethan or Nathan marked her out the game. In midfield Milo was literally everywhere winning every tackle, every 50-50 ball and always looking to bring the wide players of Rocco, Liam and Toby into the game. Eventually the pressure told and Ethan with his first touch of the game put us 1-0 up after converting a corner from Toby.
This was quickly followed by a cracking finish from Rocco who beat the defence and slammed it past the keeper. Sensing blood the Jags ramped up the pressure even more and Nathan released Rocco with a quick throw who put in a lovely cross for Henry to thump home for to make it 3-0 at half time. Mortimer were rattled and started the second half with a number of rough challenges. A defensive mix up saw us concede a sloppy goal before the ref decided he’d seen enough of one player’s persistent fouling and gave him a yellow card. However the Jags weren’t distracted and soon scored a fourth as Milo tucked in a smart finish from a cross from maybe Rocco. Lewis was a constant buzz of activity up front and unlucky to score. Finn, although not overly tested, was always a commanding presence in goal. And that was pretty much that.
Elation at the final whistle and this was a thoroughly deserved victory. Massively proud of every player today and was just reward for all their efforts this season. Thanks to all the parents, friends, family and other coaches who came to support, it was great having you there!
